“Outside In” exhibition artists bringing the Elephunk!

How many people can say they brought the Elephunk? Two of our “Outside In” exhibition artists certainly can as they managed to carve out some time from their busy 1AM gallery installation work to do so. It all started when a SOMA tech company, Cloudflare, contacted us to add some life to their freight elevator.

As we usually do for art projects, we drafted a few concepts, brought the right team together, picked up our Spanish Montana 94 colors, and got Elephunky.

Wand, the west coast Larry Bird?

It was winter of 2009 and I remember being shocked to see Larry Bird come through 1AM gallery. What was he doing here? Was he into street art, or coming to grab some colors? Being a huge Boston Celtics fan, but Warriors fan first, I dashed over to get an autograph. As I approached Larry Legend, he turned to me and said “Hi, I’m Wand”. I need glasses soon. Wand carries the perfectionist gene and precision for his craft that Bird possessed for basketball (and is able to pass as his stunt double).

Wand has elevated graffiti to another dimension, literally. Drawing from early influences of east coast freights passing through his neighborhood, his style has transcended to 3D pieces which were my favorite in 1AM’s 2009 “Inner City Prophets” exhibition.

And that’s just the beginning. After graduating with a BFA in sculpture from Ohio, Wand has his own jewelry line and will be creating exclusive 1AM jewelry dropping this 2011. Stay tuned.

Wand is one of the amazing artists in our next exhibition “Outside In” opening this February 11th, but if you want to catch an early glimpse of his street work come to 6th and Howard.

AIN’T NOTHIN BUT A SHE THANG #2: KICKIN’ IT WITH THE YMCA BAYVIEW GIRLS

You always hear about those male graff artists painting a dope mural, but how often do you hear about female graff arists? Well 1:AM had the pleasure of hosting a private mural workshop for a group of young women(ages 11-14) from YMCA Bayview These young women, and dare I say future artists, brainstormed a concept for a mural and made it come to life on canvas. They came up with a powerful message for their piece: “Girls stick together”. It’s about time more girls took matters and spray cans into their own hands!

Under the direction of Nate1 and Roman, they met every Saturday in May and one Saturday June. Check out the photos chronicling their experience.

MURALISTIC – FEAR HEADS COMPLETED!

As we mentioned last week, team 1:AM was in charge of creating Wonderland Show’s Fear Head on Golden Gate x Taylor. No one knew it was going to turn out as good as it did. The crew outdid themselves. Roman Cesario, Robert Gonzalez, and Mitsu Overstreet were the masterminds behind the operation and did an amazing job leading the team.

Since pictures speak louder than words, just look at the photos and you too will be in awe on what they accomplished on this 30′ x 45′ wall…in less than a week.

RAIN, RAIN GO AWAY…

…come again… next week after Wonderland‘s opening this Saturday on October 17th so, Roman and the crew can finish their mural on Golden Gate x Taylor.

WHAT A WEEKEND (plus a Monday)! If you passed by “Fear Head” yesterday, you may have noticed that there was no one working on the wall because of the wind and the rain. The building is so tall that it was deemed unsafe to use the forklift to finish the top part of the mural. When I pass by it, I am proud of Roman and his crew because it looks good. And if you stop and actually listen and watch them do this (there is probably 5 people working on this monstrous 30x45ft wall), their teamwork is like a well oiled machine. The vibrant color gives a complete facelift to the busy and dismal street. I can’t wait to see the finished wall.

ROMAN in WONDERLAND

1:AM gallery is part of the project titled “Wonderland”. This project is curated by Lance Fung, who is “dedicated to the ideas of collaboration, community and social engagement as a means of bringing the highest level of contemporary art to audiences from all walks of life”. Lance is our kind of guy. Check out the Wonderland website and blog. Below is a map of the participating SF businesses (click on it to enlarge).

Are you wondering how we are part of it? Our very own art director, Roman Cesario, artist, teacher, and the modern age MacGyver extraordinaire, is heading up the mural team. Him and another fella, Mitsu (who is flying all the way from Texas), are responsible for accomplishing the daunting task of spray painting on a 30ft tall and 45ft wide wall, a mural representing life in the Tenderloin. Their part of the Wonderland project is titled “Fear Head”. Make sure you say that’s what’s up to Roman when he creates the monstrous mural on Golden Gate between Taylor and Jones (starting October 10th).

This an awesome email for Twick to receive about his work. If you haven’t seen it, here are some pix… but I do advise you that it is so much more inspiring in person (especially since there were cars parked in front of the wall when I took this).

Attaboy the Muralist

It isn’t easy as it looks using a vertical cement wall as your canvas. Attaboy having only a crash course in mural production from Roman for maybe an hour, has delivered. He has graced our 6th Street wall with one of the most detailed murals since our inauguration. People already have stopped by in awe of the whimsical world he has created. I urge you guys to pass by and check it out. I promise you, you will not be disappointed.
