Now if you haven’t heard (since you’ve been under a rock for the past 2 years), 1:AM offers art classes, and not just any classes. We offer street art classes like history of graffiti and toy modification, all to satiate your craving for creativity and fun. With that, all of these classes would not have been possible without the hard work of our amazing teachers who have been with us since 1:AM’s conception.

We’ve had the honor of working with Nate1, founder of Newskool clothing, and we’ve definitely flourished with his help. Nate1 leads the “Sketching Letters” 1.0 class with much wisdom and style, leaving students wanting more! How could we disappoint our beloved students? TADDAAA! Introducing “Sketching Letters” 2.0 for next year! Not convinced yet of Nate1’s awesomeness? HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE ALTERED BARBIE SHOW

It was my first time at the Altered Barbie event and let me tell you, it was a fabulous experience. I went to the Artists’ Reception for the event on September 16 and was pleasantly greeted by an ebullient, purple and yellow-haired fairy Barbie look-alike named Sabine. She was my childhood Butterfly Barbie in the flesh, minus the champagne glass, ^_^. Sabine, along with Altered Barbie co-organizers Julie and Donna, were all wearing glamorous Barbie costumes and giddily greeting guests. Their inviting personalities weren’t the only treat at the event; the altered dolls, photos, and paintings of Barbie blew me away! Barbie as a spider, Barbie as a rocker, Barbie as a sex icon! All of these depictions of Barbie deviated from her stereotypical “idealized, perfect in every way” image and rebuilt her as something much more than just a pretty, plastic face.

Last Friday, April 16th, Lily Black kicked off his FIRST EVER solo show at 1:AM gallery. His new pieces of work, his customized toy vinyls and his sketches, were all well received. People often said with amazement,”He did that from THAT?” Lily is one of a kind. We do not think there is anyone out there in the toy modification world that is like him. He is like the master stylist of toys, he executes extreme makeovers with perfection. Not sure if those are accurate statements? Well, read Jeremy’s point of view on Neon Monster’s blog. He has a better way with words and he’ll back us up.

LILY BLACK’S FIRST EVER SOLO SHOW @ 1:AM

Embark on a journey through an apocalyptic future where the earth has frozen over and the only traces of life are bots, droids and machines. Local writer and artist, Lily Black will be exhibiting new works at his first solo show ever at 1:AM gallery. The gallery will be filled with his signature kit-bashing custom designed toys as well as one thousand drawings of human faces, all evoking the feeling of sadness, desolation and death.

The opening show is on Friday, April 16th from 7-10pm and the show will run through Saturday, May 1st. At the opening, he will also be celebrating the launch of his website, LILYBLACKTOYS.com, which features his original sculptures using modified toys.

Lily Black is one of a kind… and we are proud to say, and are very lucky, that he is part of the 1:AM family. Lily always has a way of bringing fun and intellect into any situation or conversation. Read our, weird, but entertaining interview with him here: Who is Lily Black?

So, of course, he participated in our anniversary show “Eternal Sleep”. He did something out of character though, instead of making his trademark military-customized toys, he presented affordable skull paintings made with watercolors. Let me tell you, these are flying off the walls. People love them. There are a couple left, so come by gallery today and pick up your very own Lily Black skulls!

“ETERNAL SLEEP” – 1:AM’s NEW WALL

As many anticipate each month, for every new show, we have the exhibiting artists do up our wall on 6th Street. This time we went all out. In honor of the anniversary show we have put together, we have created a collaboration between the different artists that are participating in the show. Street, urban, fine, and even custom toy artists added their style to our wall.
