It was winter of 2009 and I remember being shocked to see Larry Bird come through 1AM gallery. What was he doing here? Was he into street art, or coming to grab some colors? Being a huge Boston Celtics fan, but Warriors fan first, I dashed over to get an autograph. As I approached Larry Legend, he turned to me and said “Hi, I’m Wand”. I need glasses soon. Wand carries the perfectionist gene and precision for his craft that Bird possessed for basketball (and is able to pass as his stunt double).

Wand has elevated graffiti to another dimension, literally. Drawing from early influences of east coast freights passing through his neighborhood, his style has transcended to 3D pieces which were my favorite in 1AM’s 2009 “Inner City Prophets” exhibition.

And that’s just the beginning. After graduating with a BFA in sculpture from Ohio, Wand has his own jewelry line and will be creating exclusive 1AM jewelry dropping this 2011. Stay tuned.

Wand is one of the amazing artists in our next exhibition “Outside In” opening this February 11th, but if you want to catch an early glimpse of his street work come to 6th and Howard.

The collection of limited silk screen prints by Brian Goggin were inspired by art from across the globe. He wanted to bring audiences back in time to the 1920′s by basing the look and feel of his prints on the commercial art from the USSR while the half-tone color palettes were influenced by Cuban silk screens. All of these prints depict a memory of the Defenestration building that has been altered to put a fresh new context on the sculptural furniture pieces that have decorated the building’s walls for the past 13 years.

Profits from the sale of the prints go towards the restoration of the Defenestration building. Support “Operation Restore Defenestration” and buy a limited edition print! The exhibition is up through April 27th but if you don’t have time to pass by the gallery, purchase the limited edition prints at 1:AM’s e-commerce site. To learn more about the project, visit www.defenestration.org.

At the end of the night, we even heard Roman, our Art Director, say that it was the best opening we have ever had. We don’t know if we will ever be able to top this one. Check out the fun and entertaining people that attended the event. Maybe if they continue to come to our future events, we will feel some of the magic that was in the air during Brian’s opening.

When navigating through the streets of San Francisco, many seek or stumble upon the building with furniture scurrying across its’ walls in the midst of the busy streets of SoMa. On the corner of 6th and Howard, across the street from 1:AM gallery, stands the Defenestration building. Locals and visitors from all over the world stare at it with amazement, taking in all the wonders of the playful and uplifting art installation. Although the piece is deeply loved by the community, it has fallen into unfortunate disrepair. That is why 1:AM gallery has partnered up with Brian Goggin to bring you…

OPERATION RESTORE DEFENESTRATION: Fundraiser and Solo Show by Brian Goggin

When strolling or driving down a street in San Francisco, you have probably felt someone staring at you. A monster perhaps? A rabid monkey? Don’t be alarmed, they are real.

Lango has made his mark in the city. His craftmanship is impeccable. He transforms walls to look into mythical worlds. Being sandwiched between two of his murals (one on the Defenestration building and the other on our 6th street wall), I have heard admirers give their “oooos” and “ahhhhs”, claiming his is their favorite.

We were extremely lucky when Lango agreed to exhibit in our anniversary show “Eternal Sleep”. Different from the other artists, he interpreted the theme as a celebration of life. Through this piece, he showed that not only has he mastered the art of spray painting creatures but also, as a well trained artist, boss in the usage of watercolors and ink to paint life.
