For the 2nd time, every cut, every fade, each line, stroke, flare, doo-dad, polka dot, bit, arrow; everything is so close you can smell it, you can almost touch it, we don’t condone the tasting of any art, but as you can see it is close enough for you to enjoy to your heart and camera’s content.

Do you hear what I’m saying? If you really love it, you can bring it home with you!

Carlos Fortino Almeida has been painting for the past 11 years. He describes his work as a mixed-media “surrealistic assemblage”. He uses anything lying around as long as it is permanent or can become permanent. He wants to make his lasting imprint on the world and creates his pieces to survive long after he is good and gone.

At a tender age of 4 years old, his grandfather, also his first art teacher, taught him to do crafts. He gave Carlos projects creating everything and anything, from earrings to Christmas decorations. As a youth, he continued on his creative path by taking as many art classes as he could and graduating from FIDM in Los Angeles with a graphic design degree. He draws and paints his inspiration from his Mexican heritage, my garden, graffiti history, urban folklore, music, rustic design, his family and friends and his late grandfather, who started it all for him.

Didn’t know a truck driver had some style? Here are photos of Carlos’ work. And yes, he was a truck driver.

We met Lawrence a year and half ago. He came out with us one night because we shared a mutual friend. The evening was hazy… we hit up Gallery 1988, Poleng Lounge (or at least somewhere near there or was it Madrone?) and a couple of other places. He gave us a mini book that showcased his art. He told us about how his coffee mug made a stain on one of his papers and he started drawing around it and making the stain a focal point in his painting. Since that night, Lawrence, originally from Chicago, is a regular on the local San Francisco art scene. His work has been showcased in Gallery 1988, Lower Haters, Given, and of course, 1:AM gallery.

For our anniversary show, Lawrence transformed his signature character’s face to be a skull-like. He created a story about domination in his 3 paintings. Here is a look at his work:

For this Halloween and Dia de los Muertos weekend, checking out Shawn Griggs oil paintings at 1:AM is a great way to kick off your festivities right!

When given the theme of skulls for our “Eternal Sleep” show, Shawn Griggs, aka Redeye, was in his element. Introduced to us by Skew’s mom, we knew when we saw his work he needed to be part of our show. He is a painter, gallery owner, surfer, illustrator, word traveler, and the list goes on. Most recently, he expanded his portfolio by adding oil painting. For “Eternal Sleep”, he contributed three mixed media (including oil and wood) paintings depicting skeletons living the urban lifestyle. Most definitely, a showstopper for our show. Check out his website: www.redeyelaboratories.com.

Here are pictures of his “S to the J” piece. It is an awesome contribution and everyday I find some new detail that he expertly included to make this painting complete.

Here are pictures of their art:

Lily Black is one of a kind… and we are proud to say, and are very lucky, that he is part of the 1:AM family. Lily always has a way of bringing fun and intellect into any situation or conversation. Read our, weird, but entertaining interview with him here: Who is Lily Black?

So, of course, he participated in our anniversary show “Eternal Sleep”. He did something out of character though, instead of making his trademark military-customized toys, he presented affordable skull paintings made with watercolors. Let me tell you, these are flying off the walls. People love them. There are a couple left, so come by gallery today and pick up your very own Lily Black skulls!

When strolling or driving down a street in San Francisco, you have probably felt someone staring at you. A monster perhaps? A rabid monkey? Don’t be alarmed, they are real.

Lango has made his mark in the city. His craftmanship is impeccable. He transforms walls to look into mythical worlds. Being sandwiched between two of his murals (one on the Defenestration building and the other on our 6th street wall), I have heard admirers give their “oooos” and “ahhhhs”, claiming his is their favorite.

We were extremely lucky when Lango agreed to exhibit in our anniversary show “Eternal Sleep”. Different from the other artists, he interpreted the theme as a celebration of life. Through this piece, he showed that not only has he mastered the art of spray painting creatures but also, as a well trained artist, boss in the usage of watercolors and ink to paint life.

Pictures from 1:AM’s “Eternal Sleep”:

I was first introduced to Dia’s, aka Sean Somers, work 2 years ago. There was an opening at Fifty24SF gallery and I was inspired by one of his works. I was drawn to the 7 feet tall and 2 feet wide gold and black canvas that portrayed one of Dia’s classic sensual women lounging on a tree. She was toting a koto (a traditional Japanese mandolin) on her back. I fell in love with the piece and I bought it.

Since then, I have invited Dia to show his work at 1:AM gallery. He was part of a three man show back in July where he created an installation with a gold-leafed tree coming out of a piano. And now, he is once again adorning our walls with one of his masterpieces. We couldn’t have an anniversary show without his work and he definitely did not disappoint…with his canvas or his face painting.
