The hottest days of summer 2010 fell upon us on August 22nd and 23rd. And where were we? We were basking in the sun, stenciling shirts for UC Berkeley students and their friends, at Caltopia 2010.

We stenciled hundreds and hundreds of shirts. Everyone was gracious despite the long lines (which were a hundred people deep), the heat, and the wait time of up to an hour!

Even though we were very tired and sun burnt from this event, we did realize something, we have the best team… ever! Dan (the mastermind), Roman (zee artiste director), Nick (covert ops), Robert (the youngun) and Michele (our new intern who is probably wondering what the she got herself into) are rock stars! YEEEEEE!

Big thanks to Joe Watz for thinking of us and making this happen!

Our current exhibition “The Revolutionaries” include a series of paintings and photographs depicting the lives of Zapatista and Companeras. While EyeOne‘s paintings and Le Human Being‘s paper mache dolls add an animated twist to the serious political conflicts occurring today, the photographs by Perfecto Romero, Liborio Noval, and Raymundo Reynoso document the history and faces behind the movement.

Who are the Zapatista?

You have probably heard of or seen posters celebrating the most famous one, Che Guevara. The Zapatista are revolutionary guerillas based in Chiapas, Mexico. Chiapas is one of Mexico’s richest countries but has succumbed to massive poverty and injustice. The gap between the rich and poor is extreme with the poor hanging on to survive by a thread. The working class, which is made up of a large population of Indigenous Mayan peoples, was hit hard when Mexico’s corrupt President ordered for their farm land to be taken from them on January 1, 1994. Since then, the Zapatista Army of National Liberation went public by declaring war against the Mexican Government for its oppression of the working class.

Seen in public wearing ski masks and handkerchiefs to disguise their identity, the 3,000 Zapatista are made up of mostly poor working class peoples with a social base of Indigenous folk. Combining ideals of libertarian socialism and anarchy, they continue to fight to be free of cultural genocide and for equality. Although the war is mostly peaceful with arms only to protect their headquarters and publicity tactics to promote social change, the Zapatista guerilla movement has been recognized by the Mexican government and continues to be monitored.

Cache’s chickens are cute. The vibrant colors and the cartoon like character he paints is often found in LA’s most dismal and blighted neighborhoods. Even though he still sometimes paints on illegal walls, it seems that the community and city allow his murals to run just because it adds so much life and energy.

Cache’s chickens are more than meets the eye. After reading The Teachings of Don Juan by Carlos Castaneda, he was enamored by the symbolic representation of chickens. Castaneda writes that humans are like chickens, trapped in a coup always working and struggling making “the man” richer in his pockets and always remaining trapped in the cage with no chance out.

“A self-proclaimed pessimist and avid reader, Cache dubs American society “the machine” and references books like 1984 and Brave New World, while describing where he thinks we’re headed. “We’re a society in decline.”

He adds, “I don’t agree with this system of haves and the have-nots. It’s not because people are lazy, a lot of people work their butts off their whole lives, working two or three jobs, but they just can never move beyond their same spot.”” – Excerpt from Andrea Alegria’s write up in East Side Living Los Angeles, 2009

Word, Cache, that’s some deep stuff. Visit 1:AM gallery to be inspired by Cache’s politically versed Chickens, now through September 4th!

Phew! Whatta weekend… such a busy one that we are only writing about it now. We have finally recuperated.

We started off the weekend by attending the Best of the Bay Party at Mezzanine. And let us tell you SFBG really knows how to throw a party… free burgers from BurgerMeister, free beer, live music, and so many, to say the least, interesting people. They also were raffling off prizes and our very own Marketing Vixen, Anna, won 2 pairs of tickets to the De Young Museum. Score! We must admit, though, the free booze definitely helped make our night extra special…

Then on Friday night, we had a farewell dinner for Mark Bode’s exhibition. The 1:AM team and the Bode clan headed over to a restaurant and gorged ourselves for 4 hours. A never-ending supply of food and drinks were flowing as stories were passed back and forth. Everyone at the restaurant was looking at us, so curious that they were eavesdropping on our conversation… you can only imagine the range of topics we were covering… What a gluttonous evening! (BTW, make sure you check out Mark Bode’s Jigsaw Puzzle Release party at Medicine Agency on August 27)

Saturday was the opening of Cache and EyeOne‘s “The Revolutionaries”. This show is so dope. The art is fun, whimsical, and imaginative yet sends a strong social message. The underlying political context is so opinionated but is easily digestable through its’ playful presentation. Thanks to everyone who came through and the kids that stenciled their hearts out. A special thanks to the men of the hour, Cache and EyeOne, who worked so hard on their art and getting the show together. We’ve been loving coming to work lately because we love dem Chickens and Zapatistas!

Come check out all the hype about Chickens and Zapatistas this Saturday at 1:AM gallery for the opening of “THE REVOLUTIONARIES” featuring new works by Cache and EyeOne.

Producing beautiful symbolic murals in areas that tend to have no voice, these street artists are the epitome of “freedom of speech”. Their voice is strong and powerful yet very approachable. The characters they paint, like Cache’s Chickens, represent people in society who address pertinent issues that are plaguing communities’ minds through a fun and energetic style. Join us for the opening on Saturday, August 7th, 2010 from 12 – 6:30pm.

This will be our first ever opening during the day and we want ALL ages to come on by and join in on the fun! We invite the little tykes to bring old t-shirts, bags, shoes or whatever they want to add funk to so they can customize their environment by stenciling characters being exhibited in the show! Grown-ups can have fun too by chomping on complimentary bites and sipping on VitaminWater’s revitalizing flavors. The opening reception is on August 7th from 12 – 6:30pm and will be on display through September 4th, 2010.

Come with us on a journey to freedom, peace, and love through art. Stand for something or fall for anything!
