Microsoft Spraying Into the Night

Sketching Letters

A team of 5 from Microsoft came to the gallery on the evening of October 26, stoked to learn about graffiti art. Curious and inquisitive, they asked some wonderful questions during the history of graffiti session. Following the history lesson, they then got to see some murals firsthand, and attempted to decipher some funky fresh wild style lettering.

After learning about graffiti art, it was time for them to try their hand at sketching letters and spraying. The Microsoft crew had a playful attitude and they executed their pieces with finesse and fun.

Thanks for having a workshop with us Microsoft! You were a fantastic group and you made our jobs so easy and enjoyable, ^_^. Come back anytime! Click here for more photos from the Microsoft workshop!

What up SAP Labs?

SAP Labs stenciling tees

Graffiti action in the morning to start your day! Last Monday, October 17, 1AM had the pleasure of hosting a graffiti workshop for an awesome team of 12 from SAP Labs led by none other than SAP Lab-er Tim R. Their team arrived bright and early, fueled with bagels and coffee and ready to begin a day of graffiti festivities.

Eager to learn, their morning began with a history of graffiti lesson, followed by a mural walk tour around SoMa. After learning about graff art, it was time to gets some hands-on experience,.

With masks on and spray cans in hand, the SAP Labs team stenciled some dope looking tees and blasted out a funky fresh mural. Vibrant colors. Dots. Tags alongside the piece. What more could you ask for in a mural?

Gettin’ Splunk-ed!

Picture it: October 12, 2011. It was a hot and sunny afternoon, and there was a team of 21 from Splunk, Inc., geared up and ready for a Graffiti workshop.

But before they could start spraying, they took a history lesson or two from local graff legend Nate1. After that, the whole Splunk team scoped out the local murals around SoMa and then the spray paint fun began!

There was stenciling tees, there was spray practice, and of course, the painting of the mural. With spray cans in hand, the Splunk team painted a piece that was definitely “greater than”, ^_^.

A big thanks to Christina N. and Jeff I. from Splunk for coordinating the workshop with 1AM and thank you Splunk team for being such an awesome team to work with! Click here to check out more pics of their workshop.

Facebook drip!

History of Graffiti, Mural Walk Tour, Stenciling Tees, to Mural Production: the Facebook team met every activity with spunk, vigor and might! They were complete graffiti naturals, taking to the spray can like pros and blasting a dope mural on the wall.

Thanks for being such a cool and fun group to work with Facebook. Welcome to the wonderful world of graffiti, and come back to the gallery any time! Click here to check out more of their workshop’s pics!

Agents of After School Artistry

Galileo student getting down!

Last month, 1:AM had the honor of being asked to host a 2-part, after school graffiti workshop at San Francisco’s very own Galileo high school! We pounced on the opportunity to work with kids and help beautify a school. Really, how often does one get the request to spray a mural inside of a school, and to top it all off, alongside part of the student body

After school session #1: The Galileo team, comprised of 8 Galileo students and led by teachers Nate1 and Mario, took to the practice boards eagerly.  At the beginning of the workshop, everyone’s spraying skills varied across the board(pun intended),

but at the end of session #1, the students were fading and spraying their own letters and characters like it was no one’s business! Needless to say, 1:AM instructors Nate1 and Mario were impressed.

After school session #2: THE MURAL!  A handful of passionate, student artists spent some time sketching out concepts for the wall and presented them during the workshop.  We were all blown away by the creativity and talent that these students have.

Using some of the elements from their pieces, the whole team came together to create a mural for their after school room.  They came up with a dope mural that shows love for our wonderful city, and school pride.

Shout out to to Lee for contacting 1:AM about hosting a workshop at Galileo, our fresh teachers Nate1 and Mario, and last but not least, a shout out to the remarkably creative and inspiring kids at Galileo for making this mural possible.  You guys were a true pleasure to work with! Keep on drawing and painting!

G-G-G-Genentech!

Spray practice fun for all, ^_^

Weeks ago, Genentech’s very own Brian G. contacted 1:AM with the idea of hosting a fun event for his team, an event to get their creative juices flowing. It was a tall order but the 1:AM crew gathered some of the best and the brightest teachers/graff artists to come together and set up a workshop for Genentech.  Weeks of planning culminated when a team of Genentech-nicians arrived at the gallery with blank decks in hand and a ready thirst for knowledge and all things spray. Led by 1:AM teacher Nate1, the team got the works: a history of graffiti lesson, a mural walk tour, stenciling and mural production.

The Genentech-nicians laughed, they cried(okay, they didn’t really cry but I added that for dramatic effect)..they spray painted skateboard decks and produced a dope mural with a color scheme reminiscent of the orangey- blue Fanta bottles I drank while growing up. All in all, Genentech team was awesome!

Thank you Genentech, for coming out and being such wonderful group. Hope those mini- spray cans came in handy for all of you aspiring graff artists. From the bottom of our aerosol-stained hearts, we welcome you back to our gallery anytime!

Graff Workshops at 1:AM

You might have heard that we offer graffiti workshops at 1AM.  What exactly happens in a graffiti workshop, you ask.  Well, employees of Paypal came in yesterday, and this is what they did:

History of Graffiti Lesson

First, we give a History of Graffiti lesson.  We go way back to the 1970s and Cornbread.  We talk about trains in New York City.  Tags, Throw-Ups, and Wildstyle.  And how graffiti culture has spread around the world.  The instructor is the knowledgeable Nate1, himself a graffiti artist for decades.

Mural Walk

Next, we take a mural walk.  There are several pieces in the neighborhood that illustrate various styles and artists.  SoMa is chock full of these gems, often hiding down little-known alleyways.

Stenciling

And now we put paint in their hands!  Robert shares the finer points of using a stencil and spray can.  Everyone takes home a t-shirt that they make.

And finally we get to the real fun part…

Mural Production

After being schooled in the history and techniques of graffiti and spraycan art, Paypal gets to try their hand at painting a piece.  They DO get a little help from Nate1, Robert, and Mario, though.

Look at all that beautiful Montana paint!

Not too bad, eh?

Check out all the flicks from yesterday’s workshop here.

Can I Get a YahOooooOo Up In Here?

Yahoo! student stenciling a shirt

A few months ago, 1:AM was contacted by Tom Wailes, Senior Director of Product Design at Yahoo! Local. He wanted to have a fun corporate offsite for his team, and so he rounded up his gang of Yahoo-ligans(term of endearment!) and brought them to 1:AM to get down and dirty with graffiti.

Our resident graffiti teacher Nate1 took the Yahoo! team under his wing, giving them a brief history of the graff movement and a mural walk tour around SoMa.  After thoroughly getting their “learn on”, the Yahoo-ligans picked up their spray cans and practiced their spray technique on stenciled shirts and boards.   And if that wasn’t enough, the Yahoo! team unleashed a colorful and dynamic mural on 1:AM’s exterior wall, depicting a mummy and devil and donut? Oh my!

Check out what two lovely Yahoo-ligans had to say about her experience at 1:AM:

Yahoo! team Looking "Hardcore" in front of their mural

“[I] loved how easy-going, friendly and helpful everyone was.”-Sheba

“Everything was awesome!”-Maureen

To be honest through, we at 1:AM cant be the only ones credited for the success of this workshop.   This amazing workshop would not have been possible without the positive energy and creativity of the Yahoo! team. Thanks for being such a fantastic group Yahoo! Come back any time!

Ode to the Classes

Student getting down in Nate1's 2.0 Class

We’ve had the honor of working with Nate1, founder of Newskool clothing,  and we’ve definitely flourished with his help.  Nate1 leads the “Sketching Letters” 1.0 class with much wisdom and style, leaving students wanting more!  How could we disappoint our beloved students?  TADDAAA! Introducing “Sketching Letters” 2.0 for next year! Not convinced yet of Nate1’s awesomeness? Read up on what one student had to say about Nate1’s class: “Taking Nate1’s “Sketching Letters” was a very inspirational experience for me on different levels.  It gets deep.”-former student Michele Lin.

Some of Lily Black's works

Nate1 isn’t the only teacher who deserves credit for making 1:AM’s classes a phenomenal success! The dynamic Lily Black leads the 1.0 Toy Mod class with flair and finesse.  Check out SF Weekly’s article on Black’s class.  And if you want some eye candy, check out Lily’s site featuring some of his past and present toy projects!

We’re so stoked about celebrating our two-year anniversary with these dope teachers on our team that we wanted to share our excitement with y’all.
