MARK BODE IS ONE HARD WORKING MOFO

Last Friday, Mark Bode opened his “Wizards, Lizards, and Broads” show at 1:AM Gallery.  Let me tell you, Mark Bode is one hard working mofo.  He is the most gracious and patient artist I have ever seen dealing with fans.  He sat himself at a table under a spotlight, signing Bode comics, prints and art, and hitting up fans’ black books ALL NIGHT LONG.  In addition to all of that, he gave us and art aficionados a chance to peer into the Bode family vault by showcasing art that have never been seen before publicly by his father, Vaughn, and himself.  Thank you, Mark, 1:AM will definitely get down with you again!

GRAPHIC ATTACK! OPENING RECAP

Okay.  We are really slow on the jump lately.  Everyone has probably already read Cope2′s blog or Spankystokes.com or Mixcrate.com‘s review of the opening of our current exhibition, Graphic Attack!.  But of course, we need to add our two cents.

The show was dope.  And that is our two cents.  Naw, just playin’.  When have we ever been people of a few words?

The day of the opening artists Cope2, Pure TFP, Siloette and Queen Andrea blessed the outside walls of 1:AM with their classic east coast style of bubble letters, pieces and characters.  They also had the opportunity to add some funk to a brand new Scion car parked in front of 1:AM.  Much to the delight of the people passing by, the block was popping with color and design.  It gave people a sense of what was waiting for them inside the gallery.

Scion has never seen this before.

The eclectic crowd consisted of graffiti writers, artists, musicians, art aficionados and people from all walks of life. The atmosphere was full of excitement for the chance to have graff legends like Cope2 and Pure TFP to hit up their black books.  Local legends, like Mark Bode, Sundance, Apex, Estria, and Twick, were also in attendance.  Black books were being passed from hand to hand, collecting letterstyles from some of the greatest writers in the game.

The crowd was not the only thing to write home about.  The artwork did not disappoint.  The exhibition showed range from Andrea von Bujdoss’, aka Queen Andrea, typography to Shepard Fairey’s famous prints on wooden panels to TrustoCorp’s newest street sign to Cern’s imagery to Mare’s sculptures… the list goes on.  The art showed graffiti and graphic design at its’ finest.

CERN IS BACK FOR GRAPHIC ATTACK!

Last October, Estria held his “Don’t Sweat the Technique: Ode to the Spray Can” exhibition at 1:AM gallery. During that show, we displayed works by CERN, a New York graffiti artist who creates a unique blend of fantasy and realism and blurs the lines between graffiti and fine art.

And now his back. And we mean, back in a BIG way. Check out his work for Graphic Attack!:

"Flower Death" by Cern

"Diosa Rosada" by Cern

CERN’S BIO:

Cern began writing graffiti in the early 90’s.  Diverse in his scope, he has created numerous collaborative murals with the YMI crew and artists around the world; and he has also exhibited canvas and watercolor works in galleries in New York City and beyond.  Cern has been included in books such as Burning New York and Graffiti World.

Be here for the opening of Graphic Attack! this Friday, May 7th from 6-10pm!

WITH LOTSA LOVE, LILY BLACK

Last Friday, April 16th, Lily Black kicked off his FIRST EVER solo show at 1:AM gallery.  His new pieces of work, his customized toy vinyls and his sketches, were all well received.  People often said with amazement,”He did that from THAT?”  Lily is one of a kind.  We do not think there is anyone out there in the toy modification world that is like him.  He is like the master stylist of toys, he executes extreme makeovers with perfection. Not sure if those are accurate statements?  Well, read Jeremy’s point of view on Neon Monster’s blog.  He has a better way with words and he’ll back us up.

LILY BLACK’S FIRST EVER SOLO SHOW @ 1:AM

The opening show is on Friday, April 16th from 7-10pm and the show will run through Saturday, May 1st.  At the opening, he will also be celebrating the launch of his website, LILYBLACKTOYS.com, which features his original sculptures using modified toys.

OPERATION RESTORE DEFENESTRATION: PEOPLE WATCHING!

As we mentioned in our previous post, Brian Goggin’s Operation Restore Defenestration opening was off the chain. At the end of the night, we even heard Roman, our Art Director, say that it was the best opening we have ever had.  We don’t know if we will ever be able to top this one.  Check out the fun and entertaining people that attended the event.  Maybe if they continue to come to our future events, we will feel some of the magic that was in the air during Brian’s opening.

OPERATION RESTORE DEFENESTRATION – OH, WHAT AN OPENING!

If you weren’t at 1:AM gallery last Friday, you missed out.  It was by far the most festive and entertaining opening we have ever had.

Brian Goggin knows how to throw a fundraiser.  With a lot of help and support from friends, the night was filled with wonderful surprises, music, photos, cupcakes and beautiful people radiating with positive energy.
