Toro, the raging bull

Ubiquitous from state to state,  Toro’s presence stretches from CA to NY.  With a brief moment to chat with the bull, I had to ask, “Why Toro?”  The answer I got defined that his name was more than art.  Having gone to bullfights with his dad at a young age, they would scream TORO! TORO! TORO! while rooting for the underdog bull struggling for it’s life.

Representing the struggle and the voices of the less fortunate, Toro projects his graffiti in places people want to ignore and avoid.  This graffiti artist strives to bring light and awareness upon a world that is consumed by darkness and injustice.   Like the bull does to the matador, Toro’s graffiti stares down the law and vigorously fights to the end.

This raging bull is featured in 1AM’s current exhibition, “Outside In” until March 12.  If you can’t make it, check out the available work online.

Also, don’t sleep as Toro presents a larger than life piece in Goorin Brother’s “Extended Stay” exhibition this March 5th from 8-11pm alongside Barry McGee, Steel, and Reyes.

Print-tastic!

We at 1:AM just wanted to give a huge thanks to all of the people that came out to our PRINT show’s opening last Friday.  The art was dope, but the the guests and artists were even doper!

A myriad of artists from an array of different creative backgrounds submitted prints of their pieces, which ranged from satirical, to surreal to UNREAL!

For those of you that missed the opening last, here’s a taste of what the print show has to offer.

“The Itch” by Griffin

“Gypsy Trooper” by Hydro74

“Southern Oracle” by Robert Bowen

The PRINT show will be up through January 29, 2011 at 1:AM Gallery.  If you are interested in purchasing any of the pieces in the show, please visit our gallery or e-mail us at: info@1amsf.com.

THE CLASSICS OPENING RECEPTION

We’ve been slow on the jump.  “The Classics”, a graffiti art exhibit curated by Nate1, opened last week at 1:AM gallery.  The night was full of old skool graffiti writers from Bay Area’s Golden Age of Graffiti, DJ Dizzy from SF Zulu, DJ ExtraLars, DJ Deandroid, DJ Chris the Rebel, MykeOne AlmightyDjs and CUBA on the wheels of steel , black bookin’, and break dancin’.  It was an unforgettable opening with many legends up in here!  Peep the photos.

SFBG GIVING THE CLASSICS LOVE!

We had the pleasure of meeting Caitlin Donohue, a culture writer for SFBG, last week.  She and her friends were able to attend a sneak peek of The Classics with a private walking tour / commentary by Nate1, our curator and teacher extraordinaire .  Check out what she thought of the show and Nate1:

Golden age remix: Bay graff gets its props

Today’s generation takes in Nate1′s painted rendition of 1980s SF’s famous graff wall “Psycho City”

All photos by Caitlin Donohue

Nate1′s business card is totally dope. It’s front depicts a Kry-lon paint can, the brand most used  for graffiti in the days he was coming up as a street writer in 1980s San Francisco. “Back then we used to have to make art with automotive paint,” he tells me at 1AM gallery, where his new show on the golden age of Bay tagging, “The Classics” opens today (Fri/10). “We’re talking about paint to paint red wagons and doors,” he remembers, smiling like a man that didn’t mind too much.

The card is striking because it evokes the sentiment behind this artist and the show he’s thrown up. “The Classics” is about those icons of SF’s early days on the graffiti scene, back before anyone with a few bucks could buy specialized Mammoth paint from 1AM’s retail section, cans specially designed for low pressure artistic liberty – but it’s also about where that art form stands today.

1AM owner Anna says that before he came up with the inkling for this particular showing, Nate1 would bring around scrapbooks to street art openings, forcing heads to remember the days when. Finally, they hit upon the idea to base a show on these old masterpieces. On the gallery’s walls are seldom-seen photographs of the “Psycho City” wall in SoMa, the only place where young taggers could work on their art in public, in peace from police presence and neighborhood complaint. UB40′s ubiquitous-at-the-time scrawl is present, as is shots of trains painted by King 157, and Rigel’s game-changing robot piece.

THE CLASSICS ON DECK!

It’s our favorite part of a new opening… when artists from different walks of life, grace our 6th Street wall.  We get excited and giddy like schoolgirls cause we get to watch amazing artists get down and paint.  Nate1, curator of The Classics, wanted to get all the artists on the wall somehow (note: there are more than 20 artists exhibiting in this show!).  He started with Crayone, who created the logo, who put the title “The Classics” on one panel and the rest of the artists put their own letter styles and signed the rest of the wall.

WHY DID THE CHICKEN CROSS THE ROAD? … BECAUSE THE ZAPATISTAS WERE AFTER HIM!!!

Come check out all the hype about Chickens and Zapatistas this Saturday at 1:AM gallery for the opening of “THE REVOLUTIONARIES” featuring new works by Cache and EyeOne.

Zapatistas and Chicken inciting a revolution!

Producing beautiful symbolic murals in areas that tend to have no voice, these street artists are the epitome of “freedom of speech”. Their voice is strong and powerful yet very approachable. The characters they paint, like Cache’s Chickens, represent people in society who address pertinent issues that are plaguing communities’ minds through a fun and energetic style. Join us for the opening on Saturday, August 7th, 2010 from 12 – 6:30pm.

This will be our first ever opening during the day and we want ALL ages to come on by and join in on the fun! We invite the little tykes to bring old t-shirts, bags, shoes or whatever they want to add funk to so they can customize their environment by stenciling characters being exhibited in the show! Grown-ups can have fun too by chomping on complimentary bites and sipping on VitaminWater’s revitalizing flavors. The opening reception is on August 7th from 12 – 6:30pm and will be on display through September 4th, 2010.
