With his current solo exhibition at 1AM running until May 1, Vogue’s history comes to life through his amazing spraycan art. To get a little more in depth on some of his amazing SPRAYCAN ONLY BMX pieces, we caught up with the man himself.
“I started riding bikes at an early age with my friends. At that time, BMX was completely new in all aspects since freestlye had just began. It took hold of us and had us going out to the streets to perfect the things we were absorbing through the magazines. As time went by, I went to Golden Gate Park every Sunday for years and immersed myself with other kids that wanted to master this freestyle craze as well. The freestyle scene had blown up and eventually I started traveling to and competing in freestyle competitions.”
“As the growing pains of life continued, I began looking towards my future and college and immersed myself into my art career. BMX riding exposed me to the urban culture surrounding the city and helped the artist inside me to pick up a can and immerse myself in the graffiti culture. Having the best of both worlds, I would ride the streets and stop to create street art. With the beginning of my art career, I didn’t stop riding. I kept riding with my friends to release the competitiveness inside of me. My life, at that time, was completely absorbed by riding and painting.”
“I can’t pinpoint when or what changed in my life to lead me to embrace graffiti and stop riding the streets. Most likely it was the deeper and growing connection I had with art which overcame my passion for BMX freestyle. At that moment in life, I made the commitment to take the competitiveness I had inside from riding and fully redirect it to the walls. I’ve never looked back since. I enjoyed a good decade of freestyle BMX riding which connected me to a lot of friends that I still have to this day. I love bikes and they are an important part of me and my art.”

Weeks ago, Genentech’s very own Brian G. contacted 1:AM with the idea of hosting a fun event for his team, an event to get their creative juices flowing. It was a tall order but the 1:AM crew gathered some of the best and the brightest teachers/graff artists to come together and set up a workshop for Genentech. Weeks of planning culminated when a team of Genentech-nicians arrived at the gallery with blank decks in hand and a ready thirst for knowledge and all things spray. Led by 1:AM teacher Nate1, the team got the works: a history of graffiti lesson, a mural walk tour, stenciling and mural production.
The Genentech-nicians laughed, they cried(okay, they didn’t really cry but I added that for dramatic effect)..they spray painted skateboard decks and produced a dope mural with a color scheme reminiscent of the orangey- blue Fanta bottles I drank while growing up. All in all, Genentech team was awesome!
Thank you Genentech, for coming out and being such wonderful group. Hope those mini- spray cans came in handy for all of you aspiring graff artists. From the bottom of our aerosol-stained hearts, we welcome you back to our gallery anytime!
If you’re interested in throwing a graffiti workshop for your team or group of friends, contact Class Director Gina at gina@1amsf.com.
We at 1:AM just wanted to give a huge thanks to all of the people that came out to our PRINT show’s opening last Friday. The art was dope, but the the guests and artists were even doper!
A myriad of artists from an array of different creative backgrounds submitted prints of their pieces, which ranged from satirical, to surreal to UNREAL!
For those of you that missed the opening last, here’s a taste of what the print show has to offer.
“The Itch” by Griffin
“Southern Oracle” by Robert Bowen
The PRINT show will be up through January 29, 2011 at 1:AM Gallery. If you are interested in purchasing any of the pieces in the show, please visit our gallery or e-mail us at: info@1amsf.com.
A few months ago, 1:AM was contacted by Tom Wailes, Senior Director of Product Design at Yahoo! Local. He wanted to have a fun corporate offsite for his team, and so he rounded up his gang of Yahoo-ligans(term of endearment!) and brought them to 1:AM to get down and dirty with graffiti.
Our resident graffiti teacher Nate1 took the Yahoo! team under his wing, giving them a brief history of the graff movement and a mural walk tour around SoMa. After thoroughly getting their “learn on”, the Yahoo-ligans picked up their spray cans and practiced their spray technique on stenciled shirts and boards. And if that wasn’t enough, the Yahoo! team unleashed a colorful and dynamic mural on 1:AM’s exterior wall, depicting a mummy and devil and donut? Oh my!
Check out what two lovely Yahoo-ligans had to say about her experience at 1:AM:
“[I] loved how easy-going, friendly and helpful everyone was.”-Sheba
“Everything was awesome!”-Maureen
To be honest through, we at 1:AM cant be the only ones credited for the success of this workshop. This amazing workshop would not have been possible without the positive energy and creativity of the Yahoo! team. Thanks for being such a fantastic group Yahoo! Come back any time!
