Before They Were Millionaires: Facebook x 1AM

The whole world is watching Facebook’s IPO day unfold. Offered at $38 at the opening bell, will they reach their estimated company valuation of $137 billion at day’s end? Unlike everyone else, we are not going to count up how many more millions of dollars these investors and employees are going to have, rather we are going to take a look back at where they were before they were millionaires.

Before Facebook-ers were rolling in the benjamins, they were getting their paint on with us, at 1AM.

Despite the speculation that most of Facebookers new found wealth will be used to start new businesses or drive the real estate prices to even more astronomical levels in the Bay, we hope that they continue to stay creative and support the urban arts. Having commissioned murals by David Choe and Jet Martinez adorning their office walls and graffiti workshops as their corporate offsite, makes Facebook-ers super cool in our book, regardless of their millions.

Congratulations to Facebook! You lucky bastards.

Last night we had a creatively successful workshop with the company and clients of ShareThis. They really brought out their art skills and pushed past the fears of spray paint, windy weather, and 6th Street!
Starting off on the tag wall inside to get their juices flowing, the group of them then finished a full-out mural on the side of our gallery! I’d say it was a great night, thank you ShareThis, hope to see you next year!

“The Rusted Souls” // What’s The Story?

Who are they and what world do they live in?

Walk into an era where its human vs machine: Gaby and her troop of freedom fighters, The Rusted Souls, are seeking to eliminate the Mech tyrant order of robots, who torture and enslave disobeying humans. The story starts in the Utopian era, where technological advances led to the development of the artificially intelligent Mech robots. Soon, the Darkest Days fell upon Earth as the Mechs (termed “The Gress”) started enslaving and killing humans, following their plan to create their own “Utopia.”

“The Rusted Souls” is a Sci-fi exhibit including a variety of works such as paintings, drawings, musical installations, and digital prints all inspired by a proposed film narrative by James Garcia, curator of The Rusted Souls and featured artist.

In the show you will see work by Eve Skylar, giving the viewer an idea of the utopian and apocalyptic settings where the story takes place. In addition, there are character portraits and in-action portrayals of The Rusted Souls by James Garcia, Emerson Tung, Jesse Hernandez, Karlo Santa Ana, Christopher De Leon, Jeremy Sorrell and Ivera Pennant. A third set of works showcases the Mechs and other robots in digital prints by Dino Ignacio, acrylic/oil paintings by Christopher De Leon and more! Two hands-on sound installations by Pu22l3 are featured on the walls that visitors can tinker with to give out different electronic noises.

So come to 1AM, make your own electronic noises and check out the art!

1AM x Ken Fulk – Jean Paul Gaultier @ de Young Museum

When Ken Fulk Design contacted us to add some graffiti funk to their event, we were ecstatic. They wanted us to paint on waiter jackets, wedding dresses and sailor suits for “Le Grande Fete”, the opening of Jean Paul Gaultier’s exhibition at de Young Museum. With a very short timeline (we had less than a week to complete 70 garments), our team pulled together and delivered. 1AM most definitely made its mark on the biggest party of the year… we were seen everywhere.

The opening party was off the chain. DJ88 spun the tunes, McCalls catering served up the libations and food, and the Extra Action Marching Band made the crowd go wild… and freaked them out as well. All in all, we were in good company. Oh, and the actual exhibition? AMAZING. The best de Young exhibit we have ever seen. They were able to achieve what many exhibitions are unable to do. They made Jean Paul Gaultier’s work come alive.

Don’t sweat! Our current exhibition “Outside In” brings the murals indoors!

For the 2nd time, every cut, every fade, each line, stroke, flare, doo-dad, polka dot, bit, arrow; everything is so close you can smell it, you can almost touch it, we don’t condone the tasting of any art, but as you can see it is close enough for you to enjoy to your heart and camera’s content.

Do you hear what I’m saying? If you really love it, you can bring it home with you!
