Last Friday, Mark Bode opened his “Wizards, Lizards, and Broads” show at 1:AM Gallery. Let me tell you, Mark Bode is one hard working mofo. He is the most gracious and patient artist I have ever seen dealing with fans. He sat himself at a table under a spotlight, signing Bode comics, prints and art, and hitting up fans’ black books ALL NIGHT LONG. In addition to all of that, he gave us and art aficionados a chance to peer into the Bode family vault by showcasing art that have never been seen before publicly by his father, Vaughn, and himself. Thank you, Mark, 1:AM will definitely get down with you again!

The most sought after pieces in the Graphic Attack! art collection are Hydro74‘s prints. We have sold out of both the Pandas already and only have a couple of the Vaders and the Birds. But that’s not all he is packing. He is also exhibiting these stunning skull prints on metal and drawings on canvas that are all ornately framed in gold. We also have found out, in the course of the Graphic Attack! exhibition, that Hydro has a huge following. On a weekly basis, graphic designers, from all over the world, come in to check out his work because they are loyal readers of his blog.

"Shriners Venom" by Hydro74, Mixed Media on Canvas

Hydro’s Thoughts On His Art:

“The soul purpose of my career is to push the boundries in doing what I feel is relevant to the market as well as extract various elements and trends to be able to offer them up in my own personal work. But let’s be honest. I do what I love because I love it. Not because I have to do it, nor am forced to do it, but rather passionate about doing what I do. I firmly believe in having set style tones, yet a sense of diversity to make any various project unique to the demands that are set forth.

Typography is far more than just a simple addition to a product or brand, it is what sets the tone for the entire piece. Each letter has a way of reacting and uniting to form meaningful, powerful words that embrace a sense of emotion or power. With that knowledge, producing pieces that best represent the needs is what Hydro74 prides itself on to help other brands find their identity and voice, philosophically and aesthetically.

Apparel is a amazing medium that is widely embraced by masses to best symbolize one’s individuality while conforming to various cliques. This is something I fully understand and appreciate. Even to the point that a close friend & I put on a T-Shirt Gallery Show that grows in attendence and online with each new version that is produced. Apparel is everything that is meaningful in design because it is a common bond everyone shares and voices our most inner feelings without having to openly state it each and every time we speak. It is the true cog in the wheel of conformity that allows us the illusion of individuality and our own personal choice to be unique in this very common world.

Complexity and a fluid organic approach is what is highly valued in each and every piece. A Illustration to me is something that tells a story with out words needed. It builds a bond with the viewer who will either get it, or find it horrible, yet, the interaction is what is desired when doing a piece. Some Illustrations are trend based iconic structures meant to embrace the masses to encourage sales, while others are explorations turned to symbolic ideas on paper or fabric. Illustration is something I find deep meaning in.

It is not always what you might expect. Over the years of my career in design, I’ve been active in various other aspects of design that has helped create, develop and direct various pieces to become successful in their usage.”

“What does that say?”

“That says C-E-S. One of the NY legends that helped graffiti become the art form it is today.”

Born Robert Michael Provenzano, 1970, NY, CES is a New York City leader of the new Wild Style look in contemporary graffiti. Attention to streamlining and aerodynamics were key to the CES formula for alphabetic reconfiguration. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and the graffiti innovations of CES have been relentlessly knocked off by his peers and have influenced the new generation of graffiti writers in the U.S. and througout the world.

CES has been a graffiti artist since 1983 and continues to produce powerful visual artwork today, never settling-living from his art and learning from his art. CES has been featured in the New York Times, Rad Pages, The Source, Mass Appeal, TimeOut-New York, and Sneaker Pimps-Motug.

Check out more of his artwork on his website or come by the gallery and see his contribution to Graphic Attack!

After visitors have looked at all the artwork in Graphic Attack!, they always return to the installation by Greg Haberny. They always have to look at it more closely, realizing that they definitely missed something the first time around.

Graphic Attack! Installation by Greg Haberny

GREG’S BIO:

Greg Haberny seeks to re-interpret the cultural lifestyles and ideologies that pervade American society today through his art. Installation art is his vehicle to exaggerate the absurdity of the media circus and the violent images which have become status quo and which unchallenged, serve to further inundate our society in repression. Haberny hopes that an observer will walk away from his installations with a better understanding of his or her role in this “American Dream”; to redefine it for themselves and reclaim it as their own. His point of departure stems from satire and comedy. There are racial references as well as distortions of 1950’s commercialism with an undertone of contemporary urban street art. Haberny’s thematic vision is based on pop culture, politics, advertising, religion, and world history. Through his art he dismantles the politically correct conformist world around him. He utilizes gallery space to create an environment that engages the viewer and encourages participation. His installations utilize the walls, ceilings, and floor that reflect the content of his works individually and as a whole.
